Free West Papua : 49 Years of Papua Referendum Action Held in London and Jakarta

Reported from, CNN Indonesia - The 49th anniversary of the Papuan People's Determination (Pepera) which was held in 1969 will be held in a number of places, Thursday (2/8). In addition to Jakarta, similar actions will also be held in London, England. The action was held to support the holding of another referendum for the people of Papua.

In London, the action was mobilized by the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP). ULMWP spokesman Benny Wenda in his Facebook account stated, the action will be held in Parliamnet Square, London, England.

Benny said the independence referendum was a real choice for West Papuans.

"1.8 million people in West Papua called for a referendum on self-determination. The voice of independence is guarded internationally," Benny said.

Benny again emphasized that independence is a real free choice for the people of West Papua. He also enlivened the hashtag #LetWestPapuaVote and invited other Facebook users to openly join. Until this news was revealed, there were only 8 users who said they were participating and 63 were interested.

Benny has lived in London, England, since 2003 after a year earlier he managed to escape from Abepura Penitentiary, Jayapura. He was detained on suspicion of being involved in an attack on a police station in Abepura, and escaped during the trial.

On the same day, the Indonesian People's Front for West Papua (FRI-WP) and the Papuan Student Alliance (AMP) will also hold the Act of Free Choice.

Based on the release received by, the action will be carried out at 11.00 WIB on the Horse Statue to the State Palace.

Chairman of the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) Victor Yeimo supported and confirmed the action at the Palace. According to him, the Indonesian police have permitted and Papera's warning will continue to be voiced until the referendum in West Papua is held by the central government.

"Our demands remain the same. The Indonesian government must open a referendum or poll in a fair, transparent, democratic and peaceful manner. Let the people of West Papua be free to determine their own fate," Victor told, Thursday (8/8).

Victor reiterated that Papera was a manipulative referendum. The refendum is actually unfairly carried out and there is an evil conspiracy between Indonesia and the United States in it, especially to control Freeport's land.

In international law, added Victor, his party has a strong claim and study material if so far there has been no legal agreement or resolution internationally, even at the United Nations (UN), if West Papua has become part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia ( NKRI).

He also criticized the approach of Joko Widodo's regime in dealing with the problem of Papua. According to him, the Jokowi government often argued that it promised zero development and prosperity.

"The Jokowi regime has succeeded in propaganda if it succeeds in building Papua. Whereas the development only continues to benefit the capitalists and foreign investors. The people of West Papua have never been the subject of development. Physics are built, but the people are not," said Victor.

Supposedly, said Victor, the central government must focus on building Papuan people first, especially strengthening their political rights. The reason, the people of West Papua. according to him to this day still do not even feel part of the Republic of Indonesia. This is compounded by the fact that there is a threat of extermination of the Papuan people and their place of residence and forest which is actually cleared out.

For this reason, Victor emphasized that Papera's warning would continue to commemorate the day of crimes against humanity and political crimes against the people of Papua.
"Warnings other than in London and Jakarta will also be carried out in Australia," said Victor.
