25 Indonesian Diaspora Professors in the US Will Safeguard the Implementation of Education and Health Programs in Papua

The Indonesian Diaspora in the United States provides assistance in the form of educational programs and special autonomy funds for Papua and West Papua Provinces. Both programs are the Joint Schooling and Telemedicine service.

The Chairman of the Indonesian American Society of Academics (IASA), Edward Wanandi, said that there are 25 Indonesian Diaspora professors in the US who will oversee the implementation of this program. Meanwhile, disbursed funds have reached US $ 350 thousand or Rp 4.7 billion per year and were started since 2018.

“The funding from us is to serve the Papua and West Papua areas,” Edward said after signing a cooperation agreement for the acceleration of Papua’s development between the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) and IASA at the Bappenas Building in Jakarta on February 8, 2018.

Edward pointed out that the initial idea of the IASA to come down on Papua was to respond to the challenge of Coordinating Minister for Marine Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan during a visit to the US. Luhut who was then the Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs asked Edward and other Diaspora academics whether they can assist holistically in the development of Papua.

Apparently, 82 professors from Indonesia were interested and 25 professors were already actively helping.

The long-distance health service assistance is done to overcome the low ratio of doctors and residents in Papua and West Papua. So it is not impossible to perform medical action at health centers with guidance from specialists through a certain technology from major cities.

Meanwhile, the Joint Schooling assistance program will later on guide the youth of Papua and West Papua to learn other disciplines beyond the school curriculum such as technology, agriculture, and animal husbandry.

Joint Schooling is done because Papua’s population is spread in villages and it is difficult to bring them together in schools.

This cooperation is done as an implementation of Presidential Instruction No. 9 of 2017 on the Acceleration of Welfare Development for Papua and West Papua Provinces.
