Bilateral Meeting between Indonesia and Palau Discuss Maritime Cooperation

The Republic of Indonesia represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, held bilateral relationship with State Minister of Palau, Faustina K. Rehurer-Marugg, during a series of UN General Assembly meetings in New York, USA (21/9).

The bilateral meeting discussed about the setting of maritime boundaries between the two countries, as quoted from the official website of the Foreign Ministry.

"I and Minister Rehurer-Marugg agreed to push for the acceleration of maritime boundary talks between the two countries," said Retno.

As both maritime nations, the two Ministers also discussed maritime cooperation. In this regard, Indonesia and Palau agreed to increase cooperation in handling illegal fishing, in accordance with the MoU which has been agreed in 2016.

In addition to discussing cooperation in the maritime field, the Foreign Minister also conveyed Indonesia's nomination as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2019-2020. The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Indonesia has and would continue to commit to its contribution to international peace and security, at UN PKO. There were currently about 2800 Indonesian military and police personnel at the UN Peacekeeping Force.

As a member of the Pacific Island Forum, Palau has a strategic position and influence. The cooperation between Indonesia and Palau has been very good. Indonesia has provided various trainings to Palau including the use of coconut shells to the Palau community in the framework of technical cooperation in 2016. Both countries have also signed the Joint Communique on Combating IUU Fishing since July 2016.

The diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Palau were officially opened on July 6, 2007. The trade value of Indonesia and Palau in 2016 reached US $ 41.83 million. The main commodities of Indonesian exports to Palau are consumed goods.
