Fiji Entirely Supported The Indonesian Sovereignty in West Papua and Fiji's Cooperation with Indonesia



Indonesian Defense Minister, Ryamizard Ryacudu, signed an agreement with Fiji's National Security Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, on Friday (9/29/2017).


The meeting was held at the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, Jalan Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta.
Ryamizard said that there were several reasons for the cooperation relationship between defense fields of both countries that could be established. One of them was related to the consistency of Fiji that did not support West Papuan independence.

"Indonesia views Fiji as an important country in the South Pacific region that has consistently demonstrated its support for Indonesia's sovereignty," Ryamizard said.
"Furthermore, the positive Indonesia-Fiji cooperation can be seen from the Fijian wisdom that always supports the unity of Indonesia and does not support efforts towards independence and the separation of West Papua from the Indonesian territory. This commitment makes Fiji as a strategic partner of the Republic of Indonesia in the Pacific region," continued Ryamizard.
He said that with the cooperation, it encouraged to immediately placed defense attache in Fiji. This was to facilitate the coordination of defense cooperation between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, explained that Fiji consistently supported the Indonesian sovereignty as stipulated in the United Nations Charter which states that every country should respect the sovereignty of other countries.
"In accordance with the UN Charter, which is the integrity of a country's sovereignty, we respect Indonesia's sovereignty in west papua," he said.
Therefore, Fiji as one of the UN member states also encouraged other countries to respect Indonesia as the owner of sovereignty over Papua.
"We reveal this to our friends in the Pacific at the UN to approve the UN charter, to be consistent in accordance with the regulation," he said.
